Huntsville, AL welcomed the group at Huntsville Executive Airport (KMDQ). Known as “Rocket City USA,” Huntsville grew from a railroad and Tennessee River trade hub into a major center for U.S. Army missile and rocket work, shaped in part by the arrival of German rocket scientists and Wernher von Braun’s team, with a legacy that still shows in historic sites like one of the nation’s oldest existing railroad depots and the preserved antebellum Twickenham district.
The trip included a WINGS Safety Seminar, a visit to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center with interactive exhibits spanning Apollo, Mercury, and Space Shuttle programs and the chance to stand beneath a full Space Shuttle stack, and a tour of the U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum featuring extensive exhibits on American service members and a large collection of historic military vehicles, including the Ford Pygmy.
